Tokyo is packed with exciting districts and evening entertainment for an excursion out into the night. This vast modern city built from skyscrapers cuts a jagged horizon as far as the eye can see. Tech geeks and comic book nerds love the selection of shops in Akihabara with plenty of anime and electronics, and the Harajuku district shows off Lolita fashion. The Japanese work hard and play hard in Tokyo with some of the best nightlife in Shibuya and Roppongi.
What to See: For anyone who is a fan of Hayao Miyazaki movies like My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away, the Studio Ghibli Museum is a must when in Tokyo. To get in touch with the city’s roots, add a walk around the Meiji Shrine or tickets to see a Sumo match.
What to Eat: Noodles are more like an art form in Tokyo restaurants than a snack food found in the cupboard. Try the delicious variety of traditional udons, sobas, and ramens made with salt, soy sauce and miso to taste. The sushi-go-round is a fun way to try fresh fish dishes as they roll right off the conveyor belt.
Don’t Miss: The Japanese often wonder what’s a tourists’ fascination is with the Tokyo Tower—but it’s all for the views from the observation deck. Climb to the top of Tokyo Tower or the newest structural addition Skytree for brilliant panoramas of the city.
